PEER Support Webinars

DBHDS and OMNI Institute are committed to understanding the impact peer supporter work has on those they serve and the peer supporters themselves. In this aim, OMNI is hosting a series of webinars exploring this topic. If you are interested in learning more please contact us at SORRecovery@omni.org.

Addressing Burnout in Virginia's Peer Support Field

Because of their unique positioning in the substance use and mental health field, peer supporters have a higher susceptibility to burnout, secondary trauma, and compassion fatigue. To further explore this topic, the OMNI SOR Recovery Team hosted a webinar on Addressing Burnout in Virginia's Peer Support Field in December 2021. In addition to the overview document linked above, click here to watch a video summary of the information. You can use this video to facilitate a mini-session on burnout with your team/agency. The recording will prompt you to first listen to the information provided and then pause the video at each set of discussion questions.

Defining the Peer Supporter Role - a Guided Discussion

Given the various duties peer supporters can have at organizations, it can be hard to define the boundaries of their role. DBHDS and the OMNI SOR Recovery team hosted a guided problem solving discussion for peer supporters and their supervisors to understand how building shared expectations and distinct roles can help reduce conflict on your team. The handout linked above outlines ways to successfully define the role at your organization. Additionally, you can check out the slides used during this discussion here for a more in-depth look at this topic.

Making Meaning: Webinar on Using the 6th Stage of Grief

Grief and loss are a part of everyone’s life, but they have a particular importance in recovery and for Peer Supporters, who go through the grief and loss process in a variety of ways through their work and in their own recovery. In July of 2022, DBHDS and the OMNI SOR Recovery team hosted a webinar to discuss the six stages of the grief process, with a particular focus on making meaning, which is the sixth stage of grief. Through our presentation and small group discussions, we sought to provide space for Peer Supporters and their supervisors to share how making meaning of loss is relevant to their professional and personal lives. We are sharing the slides from this webinar here for anyone who would like an in-depth look at this topic. Please contact us at SORrecovery@omni.org with any questions!
